Although you might think your tile and grout are getting clean with a once-a-week mop job, they’re probably not. The grout between your tiles holds more dirt than you think. Never fear, there are plenty of easy, do-it-yourself options for cleaning your tiles and making them sparkle like new again, and the science behind cleaning grout can help you clean your tile more efficiently, too.
One of the least expensive and most effective ways to clean your tiles is to get a good steel sponge and some bleach. Mix up the bleach with warm water, and using that good old-fashioned elbow grease, scrub at the grout and any other dirty pock-marks in your tiles. The stains will start to lift and you can wipe the residue and dirty bleach away with a towel or a normal sponge. After the grout and tiles are bright and white again, run a mop over the tile and you’re good to go!
If you don’t have all day to scrub at your tiles, there are other options that work with decent results. One of these is oxygen bleach, a powder that, when mixed with water, acts as a high-power bleach without all of the scrubbing work. You can mix it up and let it sit on your tile floor for about 15 minutes. Come back and run a brush over the tile, and with minimal effort, most of the dirt will lift up. You can also mix oxygen bleach up as a mop cleaner and leave it on your tile for about 30 minutes before coming back and rinsing it off.
